The Marangu Route is one of the most popular trekking routes for reaching the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. Known for its relatively easier path and availability of hut accommodations, it is often recommended for those who prefer more comfort while trekking.
Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transfer to your hotel in Arusha/Moshi.Preparation Meet your guide, go through gear check, and have a briefing about the trek.-Overnight: Hotel in Arusha/Moshi.
Drive to Marangu Gate: Depart from Moshi early in the morning and drive to Marangu Gate (around 2 hours).- Trekking: Start your trek through the rainforest. The distance is approximately 8 km (5 miles), and it takes about 4-5 hours to hike.- Mandara Hut: Arrive at Mandara Hut for the night. This area may offer views of the Maundi Crater and has basic accommodations.- Overnight: Mandara Hut.
Trekking: Depart Mandara Hut after breakfast, trekking to Horombo Hut. This leg covers approximately 12 km (7.5 miles) and takes about 6-7 hours.- Landscape Change: Experience the transition from rainforest to heath and moorland.- Horombo Hut: Arrive at Horombo Hut in the late afternoon and enjoy the stunning views of Mawenzi Peak.-Overnight: Horombo Hut.
- Day Hike: Spend an acclimatization day at Horombo Hut. Take a hike to the Mawenzi Hut or along the trail to help your body adjust to the altitude (optional).- Relax: Enjoy the day, rest, and hydrate. Your body will appreciate the acclimatization.- Overnight: Horombo Hut.
Trekking: Depart early after breakfast, heading towards Kibo Hut. This section is around 10 km (6.2 miles) and takes about 6 hours.- Climatic Changes: Pass through the alpine desert zone and witness the striking landscape.- Kibo Hut: Arrive at Kibo Hut, where you will prepare for summit day.- Rest: Early dinner and rest as you will wake up very early the next day for the summit.- Overnight: Kibo Hut.
- Summit Attempt. Wake up around midnight for the summit attempt. Climb through the night to reach Uhuru Peak (5,895 m / 19,341 ft). The trek to the summit takes about 6-8 hours.- Sunrise at the Summit: Experience breathtaking views at sunrise before descending back to Kibo Hut for some rest.-Descent to Horombo Hut: After resting, continue down to Horombo Hut, which will take approximately 6-8 hours.- Overnight: Horombo Hut.
- Trekking: After breakfast, trek down from Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate (about 20 km / 12.5 miles) which takes around 5-7 hours.- Celebrate: Arrive at Marangu Gate, sign out, and celebrate your achievement with your guide and crew.- Transfer to Moshi: Drive back to your hotel in Moshi for a rest.- Overnight: Hotel in Moshi.
Depending on your flight schedule, you can spend some time in Moshi or head to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your onward journey.
