The Umbwe Route is one of the more challenging paths up Mount Kilimanjaro, known for its steep ascent and stunning views. It is generally less crowded than other routes, providing a more remote experience.
Arrival: Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transfer to a hotel in Moshi.Briefing:Meet with your trekking company for a pre-trek briefing and gear checks.Overnight:Stay at a hotel in Moshi.
Drive to Umbwe Gate: Early morning transfer to the Umbwe Gate (approximately 1.5 hours).Start Trekking: Begin your ascent through beautiful rainforest, observing unique flora and fauna.Distance: Approximately 10 km (6 miles).Altitude: Start at 1,600 m (5,250 ft) and climb to 2,880 m (9,450 ft) at Umbwe Camp.Overnight: Umbwe Camp.
Umbwe Camp to Barranco CampAscent through moorland: Continue trekking through the moorland region, enjoying views of the surrounding lands.Distance: Approximately 7 km (4 miles) with a challenging ascent.Altitude: Climb to 3,950 m (12,959 ft) at Barranco Camp.Highlight: Enjoy views of the cliffs of the Barranco Wall.Overnight: Barranco Camp.
Trek Barranco Wall: Start the day by climbing the Barranco Wall, a steep but short ascent.Continued Trekking: Traverse to Karanga Valley, where the camp is located.Distance: Approximately 5 km (3 miles).Altitude: Climb to 4,000 m (13,123 ft) at Karanga Camp.Overnight: Karanga Camp.
Morning Trek: Depart from Karanga Camp and head towards Barafu Camp, the final camp before the summit.Distance: Approximately 4 km (2.5 miles).Altitude: Climb to 4,600 m (15,091 ft) at Barafu Camp.Rest: Rest and prepare for the summit attempt.Overnight: Barafu Camp.
Midnight Ascent: Begin your summit attempt around midnight.Reach Uhuru Peak: After a strenuous climb, reach Uhuru Peak (5,895 m / 19,341 ft) at dawn.Descent to Mweka Camp: After celebrating the summit, descend to Mweka Camp.Distance: Approximately 12 km (7.5 miles) to the summit and 11 km (6.8 miles) down to Mweka Camp.Overnight: Mweka Camp.
Final Descent: Trek from Mweka Camp back down to Mweka Gate.Celebration: Arrive at the gate, where you will receive your summit certificates.Transfer to Moshi: Drive back to Moshi for celebration and relaxation.Overnight: Stay at a hotel in Moshi.
